Vehicle Graphics & Decal Maintenance

At Alef By Cordoba, we use high-performance vinyl designed to withstand the West Texas elements. However, the lifespan of your "mobile billboard" depends on proper aftercare. Follow these guidelines to keep your graphics looking sharp from the job site to the showroom.

🚨 The 72-Hour Rule (Critical)

Do not wash your vehicle for at least 72 hours after installation. The adhesive needs this time to "gas out" and create a permanent bond with your vehicle's paint. Washing too early—especially with high pressure—can cause the edges to lift or bubbles to form.

1. Washing Your Vehicle

  • Hand Wash is Best: We highly recommend hand washing with a soft sponge and a pH-neutral automotive soap.

  • Avoid Automated Brush Washes: The heavy, rotating brushes in automated car washes can catch the edges of your decals, causing them to peel or scratch. Touchless washes are a safer alternative if you cannot hand wash.

  • Rinse Thoroughly: After washing, rinse with clean water to ensure no soap residue remains, as dried soap can "etch" into the vinyl over time.

2. Pressure Washing Guidelines

If you must use a pressure washer (common for removing heavy mud or oil field grime), follow these strict safety rules:

  • Maintain Distance: Keep the spray nozzle at least 18 inches away from the graphics.

  • The 90-Degree Rule: Always hold the nozzle perpendicular (90°) to the graphic. Never spray at an angle toward the edge of a decal, as the pressure can "knife" under the vinyl and lift it.

  • Settings: Keep water pressure below 2,000 psi and water temperature below 180°F (80°C).

3. Dealing with "West Texas" Hazards

  • Fuel Spills: If fuel or oil spills on a graphic, wipe it off immediately and rinse with water. Prolonged exposure to petroleum products will degrade the vinyl.

  • Bird Droppings & Insects: These are acidic and can permanently stain the vinyl if left in the sun. Clean them off as soon as possible with warm, soapy water.

  • Dust & Sand: Avoid using a dry cloth to "dust" your graphics. The grit in the Permian Basin acts like sandpaper and will create microscopic scratches. Always use water.

4. Waxing & Polishing

  • Gloss Graphics: You can use a high-quality spray wax. Ensure the wax does not contain any abrasives or polishing compounds.

  • Matte & Satin Graphics: Never wax or polish matte vinyl. Wax will create permanent "shiny" spots and uneven splotches that cannot be repaired. Use a specialized matte detailer instead.
