Laser Engraving & Hard Goods Care

Laser Engraving & Hard Goods Care

At Alef By Cordoba, our laser engraving is a permanent physical bond with the material. Whether it’s a personalized gift or corporate branding for your team, follow these care instructions to protect the finish and the fine details of your engraving.

1. Engraved Tumblers & Drinkware (YETI, RTIC, etc.)

  • The "Hand Wash" Rule: Even if your tumbler is marked "Dishwasher Safe," the high heat and harsh chemicals in dishwasher detergents can dull the powder coating and the crispness of the engraving over time. Hand washing with a soft sponge is highly recommended to maintain the "showroom" shine.

  • Avoid Abrasives: Never use steel wool or scouring pads on the engraved area. This will scratch the surrounding powder coat and can blur the fine lines of the laser etching.

  • Chemical Caution: Do not use bleach or cleaners containing chlorine, as these can pit the stainless steel revealed by the engraving.

2. Engraved Wood (Signs, Boards, & Plaques)

  • Never Submerge: Wood is a porous, living material. Never soak engraved wood in water, as this will cause warping, cracking, and "fuzzing" of the engraved grain. Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately.

  • Conditioning: For functional items like cutting boards or coasters, apply a food-safe mineral oil every 3–6 months. This prevents the wood from drying out and keeps the engraving dark and legible.

  • Sun Exposure: Intense West Texas sunlight can bleach natural wood and cause the engraving to lose contrast. Display indoor wood signs away from direct South-facing windows.

3. Acrylic & Glass Engraving

  • Microfiber Only: Acrylic scratches very easily. Only use a clean microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints or dust. Never use paper towels or napkins, which contain abrasive wood fibers.

  • No Ammonia: Avoid using glass cleaners like Windex on acrylic, as ammonia can cause "crazing" (tiny internal cracks). Use a specialized acrylic cleaner or mild dish soap and water.

  • Thermal Shock: Avoid moving glass or acrylic items rapidly between extreme temperatures (like a hot car to a cold office), as this can cause the material to crack along the engraving lines.

4. Leather & Leatherette Patch Hats

  • Spot Clean Only: If your engraved leather patch gets dirty, use a damp cloth to lightly dab the area.

  • Do Not Soak: Never put a patch hat in the washing machine. Water will cause the leather to stiffen, shrink, or lose its engraved contrast once it dries.

  • Air Dry: If the patch gets wet in the rain, allow it to air dry naturally. Do not use a hair dryer or high heat, as this will cause the leather to crack.
